In a message from the dpa news agency, experts explain important information on the topic: "The mild temperatures have caused allergies to early bloomers to start as early as December," explained Professor Joachim Saloga from the University Medical Center Mainz. Gerhard Lux ​​from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach confirmed this: "Pollen from Hasel and Alder was already on the way."

Complaint-free time for allergy sufferers reduced
Lux continued: "The birch could also be earlier due to the currently very warm weather." The pollen flight was not only favored by the warm temperatures, but also by the little rain in many parts of Germany. For allergy sufferers, winter with a less early pollen count is a rather symptom-free time in which the immune system, which reacts too sensitively, can regenerate. "Without this break, the risk of developing asthma increases," explains Saloga. "The affected mucous membranes and respiratory tract cannot heal as well, which can lead to permanent damage."

Clothes worn outside to the cloakroom
When the pollen flies, it is difficult to escape. On the website "pollentrend.de" of the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB) you can find out about current pollen reports. For indoors, Saloga advised pollen grids that help keep 90 percent of the pollen away. In addition, clothing that has been worn outdoors should be left directly in the cloakroom and brushed through the hair with water after a stay outdoors. "It would be best, of course, to wash your hair every time you were outside," says Saloga. "In this way you can at least reduce the pollen count indoors."

Hyposensitization to hay fever
Otherwise, according to the expert, anti-histamines and a so-called hyposensitization against hay fever help. With this, the immune system is slowly getting used to the allergens. "You should start raising awareness at a time when you come into contact with the allergens as little as possible," explained the professor. "But if the pollen flies all year round, this complicates the therapy." This is usually started in autumn so that in spring - when most pollen flies - an improvement already occurs. Most health experts advise sufferers of this immunotherapy and point out that it can also prevent many asthma diseases in advance, since asthma is one of several possible health effects from hay fever.

Natural home remedies provide relief
However, as Salonga said, according to the dpa news agency, awareness of "top pollen count" should be reduced or even suspended. In the meantime, allergy sufferers should do little exercise outdoors, as the allergens get particularly deep into the bronchi. To alleviate their symptoms, hay fever sufferers often use a nasal douche: the nasal passages are rinsed daily with water and brine such as Emser salt, thus simply transporting pollen and dirt particles out.
