Thuringian fruit growers expect a lush cherry harvest
Good news for all lovers of delicious fruit: this year the cherry harvest in Thuringia is abundant. The fruits are also very sweet this year. Cherries have few calories, but are rich in vitamins and minerals.
Lush cherry harvest this year
This year the cherry harvest in Thuringia is abundant, reports the news agency dpa. Accordingly, Jörg Dornberger from the Fahner Obst sales cooperative in Gierstädt said that there were a lot of very sweet fruits. However, the cherries are slightly smaller than last year because of the long drought. According to the information, it was the other way round in 2014: "There were fewer, but larger fruits," said Dornberger. He further stated that the minimum wage that has been in force since this year has so far not been reflected in the prices of the cherries. Although labor costs are higher, seasonal fluctuations in the harvest played a more important role in prices.
Healthy and tasty
Both in Thuringia and in other federal states, consumers will have the opportunity to harvest cherries from many fruit growers in the coming weeks. The calculation is then based on kilos. If one decides to buy in the supermarket, it should be noted, among other things, that fresh sweet cherries should have a stem. Otherwise the fruit will bleed from the stem. Cherries are low in calories and rich in nutrients such as folic acid, iron, potassium, magnesium and B and C vitamins. The phytochemicals contained in the fruits are healthy. They help to strengthen the immune system and are even said to have a preventive effect against cardiovascular diseases and cancer. (ad)
